WHAT'S NEW
2011 Mr. Douglas Roche, who has been nominated for a Nobel peace prize, will give a talk on the global political issues at the Institute for the USA and Canada Studies in Moscow on June 9, 2011. The 10th RACS Biennial International Conference “Canada and Russia: Facing Northern and Arctic Challenges” will take place in Saint-Petersburg on September 23-25, 2011. The first part of the Conference will be devoted exclusively to the Northern and Arctic issues, the appropriate themes include but are not limited to the following: promoting peace and security in the Arctic, developing natural resources, providing economic prosperity in the North, improving Aboriginal life, protecting the natural environment, learning from Northern cultural heritage, and enlarging international cooperation in the North and Arctic. The second part will allow the contribution from Canadianists in different areas covering the themes of domestic policies, Canadian economy, and social and cultural developments. Any other theme relevant to Canadian Studies (Canadian history, literature, etc.) will be also considered. Call for papers in .pdf “The RACS Bulletin” for the year 2010 is now available for download. Arkady Cherkasov, an outstanding scholar and a well-known canadianist, passed away on March 12, 2011 at the age of 66. For many years Dr. Cherkasov was a leading research fellow at the Institute for the USA and Canada Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and severed as a member of the RACS’ executive board. 2010 A series of reports on Canadian domestic and foreign policy was presented during the Academic Council of the Institute for the USA and Canada Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which took place on December 24, 2010 in Moscow. A round table “Nature and Human Being in Canadian History, Literature and Public Life” took place at the faculty of journalism of the Moscow State University on December 6, 2010. The round table was organized in the framework of the XXXVI International Conference of the Society for North American Cultural Studies. A RACS’ academic conference “Russia and Canada: facing global challenges” took place in St. Petersburg on November 22-23, 2010 at the St. Petersburg Economics and Finance University. Academic and practical seminar “The Canadian Sovereignty: history of formation and modern challenges” took place on May 12-14, 2010 at the Bryansk State University. The seminar was organized by the RACS and the Embassy of Canada to Russia. A school of Canadianists was organized for students at the St. Petersburg Economics and Finance University on March 30-31, 2010. An international academic and practical seminar “Internet and traditional mass media in media-cultural space of Canada and Russia” took place at the Saratov State University on February 2-4, 2010. The seminar was organized by the Canadian Embassy to Russia, the RACS, the School of Journalism of the Quebec University in Montreal, and the departments of literature and journalism and of Romanic philology of the Institute of Philology and Journalism of the Saratov State University. An academic and practical seminar “Science and Education in a federal state: Canadian and American experiences” took place at the Kazan State Economics and Finance University on January 18-19, 2010.
