Mr. Douglas Roche, who has been nominated for a Nobel peace prize for his work on the issue of nuclear weapons, will give a talk on the global political issues at the Institute for the USA and Canada Studies in Moscow on June 9, 2011 Douglas Roche served as Canada's Ambassador for Disarmament. He was elected Chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee in 1988. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada from 1998 to 2004. Mr. Roche has served as President of the United Nations Association in Canada and was the founding President of Parliamentarians for Global Action. He also is the founding Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative, co-sponsored by eight international non-governmental organizations specializing in nuclear disarmament. Mr. Roche is the author of twenty books, and has contributed chapters to thirteen more, including Creative Dissent: A Politician's Struggle for Peace. From 1989 to 2001, he was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, where he taught "War or Peace in the 21st Century?" He is an Officer of the Order of Canada. The event will take place at the Institute for the USA and Canada Studies on June 9, 2011, at 11.00 a.m. The Conference Hall of the Institute is located at 2/3 Khlebny pereulok (in the walking distance from Arbatskaya subway station).
